Cairns has long been known as the gateway to the Great Barrier Reef, but beyond the blue lies a richly diverse region just waiting to be explored. Below are some of the top experiences showcasing what else Cairns has to offer.

Spirit of Cairns

Spirit of Cairns’ dinner cruise treats guests to fresh local seafood, live entertainment and stunning views of Cairns City and its surrounding mountains. Departing daily from the marina at 6:30pm, it’s the perfect activity for travellers arriving in Cairns that day who have missed the boat on the other, well, boat (and land) tours that leave first thing in the morning.

The 2.5 hour cruise takes place on a luxurious, air-conditioned vessel with large outdoor decks, ideal for enjoying the panoramic mountain and city views with a drink in hand. A complimentary glass of sparkling wine, beer or soft drink is included, along with a delicious hot and cold buffet dinner.

Wait-A-While Rainforest Tours

Offering the chance to see one of Australia’s most elusive (and cutest) animals, the platypus, Wait-A-While’s afternoon and nocturnal wildlife spotting tour is the only one of its kind in the region. Incredibly informative and interactive, the tour is capped at 11 people and is run by owner-operator Paul, who has a wealth of knowledge about the region and the species that inhabit it.

Departing Cairns at 2:00pm and returning at 10:00pm, this tour is a welcome change from the usual 7am start – instead your client can hit snooze 10 times, enjoy a leisurely breakfast and lay by the pool before experiencing an amazing tour in the afternoon. Included is afternoon tea overlooking a volcanic crater lake and dinner at a country restaurant. And if you have clients staying at Rose Gums Wilderness Retreat, don’t forget they can now do the Wait a While tour while staying there as well.

Billy Tea Safaris

No visit to Tropical North Queensland is complete without seeing the oldest living rainforest on earth, the Daintree. It’s proximity to the Great Barrier Reef is one of the most unique features of our region. On their signature day tour, Billy Tea Safaris take travellers to the exact place where the two World Heritage listed sites meet – Cape Tribulation.

Departing daily from Cairns, Northern Beaches and Port Douglas hotels, the itinerary includes a Daintree River cruise, freshwater swim, guided boardwalk tour, 4WD drive and food stops aplenty.

For those wishing to get off the beaten track, Billy Tea offers two more excellent day tours that visit the Chillagoe Caves (showcasing North Queensland Outback at its finest) and the Atherton Tablelands (combining excellent food, wine and waterfalls).
